Maura Shine
Key Account Manager, Ireland and UK
How did you first connect with DSA?
I knew someone in the medtech industry who was looking to fill an inside sales role. When I said I was interested, he asked what I knew about the industry and I said, “Nothing, but I know sales.” Almost 10 years later, I’m the territory manager and it’s going great. I’ve learned a great deal from both my customers and colleagues, and I’m very thankful to Barry and Tom for having faith in me and giving me this opportunity.
What has been your greatest challenge in the medtech industry?
My biggest challenge coming into the medtech industry is impostor syndrome. I’m not an engineer, and I don’t have a technical background. At my first tradeshow, I was going around like deer in headlights. A colleague took me aside, said “Maura, just be honest with who you’re in front of about what you know.” I really took that to heart. Now, I have no problem saying, “I don’t have the answer for you right now, but I have technical experts on speed dial and can come back to you with that answer.”
What do you like most about your job?
I love the variety every day. I could be sitting with an R&D engineer at a small startup in the morning, then meeting with global procurement for a multinational in the afternoon. It’s just phenomenal what’s going on in the medtech sector, the life-changing devices coming to market. When you’re driving home at the end of the day, it’s great to think, “We play a really small part in that.”
What do you like most about being part of the DSA team?
The energy from group, the experience that the team has, the way we collaboration on global accounts—everyone is always there to help you. But most of all, the motivation I get from the team. Our annual sales meetings can be intense, but being with the team really energizes me and I come back reinvigorated.
What role does feedback from others play in your career?
It’s very important to me to ask for feedback from colleagues and customers. I’m always looking for areas to improve so I can put the best foot forward for DSA and the companies we represent. You’ve got to step outside your comfort zone. You’ve got to push yourself beyond your limits, because that’s where you excel.
What do you do to recharge?
If I’m working too much or feel stressed out, I like to walk along the beach or just hike in the woods with my dog. I love a road trip to go off and discover another part of country. That recharges the battery for sure.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love taking pictures. I have pictures I’ve taken all over the world around my house to remind me of times that were really special to me. I also read a lot of books, everything from fiction to autobiography to professional development to true crime. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to read a chapter a day.
What is something that might surprise people about you?
I do a lot of sketching in my free time. People think I’m bubbly, but my art is very dark. I thought at one point I’d be comic book artist—maybe in my next life that’s what I’ll be.
Where’s the best place you’ve traveled to?
I was in Dubrovnik twice last year. It’s a beautiful city! I also conquered my fear of heights in Dubrovnik. They have a cable car that you can go up to the top of the mountain and look down over city and Adriatic Sea—it’s stunning.
Who’s your team?
I’m from Limerick, so my blood runs green! We’re the all-Ireland hurling champions going for five in a row, so fingers crossed. I’m also a huge rugby fan. I even own a piece of Thomond Park Stadium!
